Out of Europe: Investigating Hystrix cristata (Rodentia: Hystricidae) skull morphometric geographic variability in Africa

چکیده

The crested porcupine Hystrix cristata is one of the most well-known members Family Hystricidae, yet very little known regarding its geographic variability in Africa. Two alternative hypotheses exist; pre-1940s classical taxonomy supported existence a distinct Eastern African species, galeata, whereas recent molecular data seem to support only North-South separation inside single with geographic-ecological barrier represented by Sahara desert. Our morphometric recognition senegalica Cuvier, 1822 as sub-Saharan representative species clear morphological difference between North and porcupines, which re-conductible mostly size difference. Within H. c. senegalica, our analysis seems weak West East samples. Owing considerable qualitative skull differences overlooked data, taxonomic status galeata remains uncertain well porcupines North-East Africa (Nubia). results also highlight role (mainly Maghreb) refuge for nominal taxon. This suggests that intraspecific presently further integrative studies more samples are needed adequately assess porcupines.&nbsp

The morphology of the penis in porcupine (Hystrix cristata)

In this study, histological and macroanatomical structures of porcupine penis were examined on 3 adult male porcupines. The non-erectile position of porcupine penis was directed to caudal. There was an obvious collum penis. Glans penis with a black colour was easily distinguished from corpus penis which had a white color. There were cornified papillae covering on both the glans penis and corpus...

Immunohistochemical localization of calbindin-D28k in the kidney and cerebellum of the porcupines (Hystrix cristata)

The localization of calbindin in the kidney and cerebellum of Hystrix cristata was investigated immunohistochemically using an antiserum against the 28k Da calbindin of chicken duodenum. Calbindin-D28k is an intracellular protein with a high affinity for calcium. This protein is exclusively localized in the distal convoluted tubules of the kidney and in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum. Functio...

The dissemination of pelvic limb nerves originating from the lumbosacral plexus in the porcupine (Hystrix cristata)

In this study the nerves originating from the plexus lumbosacrales of porcupines (Hystrix cristata) were investigated. Four porcupines (two males and two females) were used. The plexus lumbosacrales of animals were appropriately dissected and dissemination of pelvic limb nerves originating from the plexus lumbosacrales was examined. The nerves originated from the plexus lumbosacrales of porcupi...

THE HABITS AND INFLUENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE OLD WORLD PORCUPINE Hystrix cristata L. IN THE NORTHERNMOST PART OF ITS RANGE

The Crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata L.) has been shown to have considerably increased in numbers, and to have occupied new territories in Tuscany, which is the northernmost part of its range. New data on its ecology and biology, and the negative effects of an excessive density of these rodents on the rural and natural environment are reported. Since this species is protected by law in Italy...
